FUN for all the family is on the cards as the annual Comet Festival in Port Glasgow returns this weekend.

The event will be taking place in the town’s Coronation Park on Saturday June 24 starting from 11.30am through until 6pm.

The festival is free to attend and will feature live music, funfair, children’s activities, stalls, and food and drink tents.

There will also be the coronation of the new gala king and queen, Newark Primary pupils Cooper Deegan and Jessica Wilson.

Provost Drew McKenzie said: “The Comet Festival is a firm favourite in the Port Glasgow and wider Inverclyde calendar of events and I’m very much looking forward to it.

“There will be a good mix of entertainment and things to do for younger and older people, including many free activities, and is always a great family day out and there is no entry fee whatsoever.

“Fingers crossed we have some more excellent weather like what we’ve been enjoying of late on the day itself but it will be a fabulous event regardless.”

The provost met new gala king Cooper and fellow Newark Primary pupil Louie Barilli along with Jackie Cunningham and Tracey McEachran, from the Comet Festival Committee, at Coronation Park to drum up support for the event in just over a week’s time.

Comet king Cooper, who is 10 and in P6, was chosen for the role having already been crowned ‘best boy’ in his Boys’ Brigade and having excelled in football and taekwondo.

He said: “I usually come along as a visitor so I’m looking forward to being there as the gala king.”

The event is being organised by the Comet Festival Committee with support from Inverclyde Council and is part of the Meliora Festival once again this year.

Jackie, who is from the committee, said: “It’s a big part of Port Glasgow and we love to do something for the town.

“The whole town is invited and there will be lots of free activities, including arts and crafts, music, bouncy castle, and bookbug sessions for under-fives.

“We try to have something for everyone and to promote togetherness and community spirit.”

Fellow event organiser, Tracey, added: “Fingers cross we have more weather like this on the day as well.”
