POLITICIANS have vowed to support a vulnerable mum who is at 'breaking point' after three years of caring for her severely disabled son on her own.

Donna Baynes told the Telegraph earlier this week how she has been left 'drained' after a private company pulled the plug on helping 12-year-old Logan Miller in 2020.

MSPs Stuart McMillan and Jamie Greene have both made representations to Inverclyde Health & Social Care Partnership (HSCP) to establish why there is a lack of support for Logan.

The youngster has spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy and autism, has undergone ten surgeries since he was born and needs two people to care for his basic hygiene needs morning and night.

But Donna has been left to rely on family, including her 13-year-old niece, in her continual struggle to look after Logan.

Mr McMillan said: "Since meeting Donna at one of my surgeries last year, my staff and I have been trying our best to support her and her family across a range of issues.

"The most significant of them is the care package for Logan, a young man that has already gone through so much in his early life.

“Following recent discussions with Donna, my office has again reached out to the HSCP and are trying to establish exactly what is the main reason for the lack of support and care options available to Logan.

"We stand ready to do anything we can to support Donna and Logan and I have said I am more than willing to raise her situation with the Scottish Government if the problems she is facing are part of a wider issue.

“My office now has a standing telephone call with Donna each week, for either a general catch up or to go over any new developments. As always, if any constituents are facing similar issues, please get in contact with me via email or telephone.”

Greenock Telegraph:

Greenock-born West Scotland MSP Mr Greene said: “My heart goes out to this poor family who are struggling to ensure that Logan’s care needs are fully met.

"It is no wonder his poor mum is at her wits end."

Mr Greene added: “I have written to the Chief Officer of Inverclyde’s Health and Social Care partnership urging them to explore every avenue they can to put a suitable care package in place.

“Scotland’s social care system is in dire straits as a direct result of chronic underfunding of our local councils, so I fully recognise the overwhelming pressures social care services are under right now, but this situation cannot go on a moment longer for this family.

“My team will continue to support Donna in any way we can, to ensure that a situation where she can no longer feel capable of caring for Logan is completely avoided.”

Single parent Donna told the Telegraph: "I am at the end of my tether, I am at breaking point."
