GREENOCK acting star Martin Compston is calling on the public to back a charity’s calls for Rishi Sunak to make a ‘clear’ commitment to providing basic services for all babies and toddlers in the UK.

The Line of Duty actor has added his name to an open letter penned by Unicef UK.

The letter, addressed to the Prime Minister, seeks to promote the creation of a National Baby and Toddler Guarantee.

It states that all children and families should have access to affordable childcare, health visits, mental health support, maternity care and support for educational needs and disability.

According to figures from Unicef, one in three parents of babies and toddlers struggle with the cost of childcare, with six in ten facing mental health difficulties.

Martin shared the letter with his social media followers, saying: “I have signed Unicef Uk’s open letter to call on the UK Government to commit to the National Baby and Toddler Guarantee – a promise that clearly lays out the basic services every child under five is entitled to, no matter who they are or where they live.

“Many new parents and carers are missing out on the support they need and deserve.”

The letter has so far gained signatures from 80 organisations, ambassadors and supporters.

Martin is joined on the list by Andy Murray, Ewan McGregor, James Nesbitt, Olivia Colman and Michael Sheen, among other household names.
