A GREENOCK man charged with assaulting a woman to the danger of her life is set to stand trial before a jury at the sheriff court.

Lee Doherty - who is accused of causing the woman to lose consciousness - maintained a plea of not guilty to the indictment charge at the latest calling of the case.

Doherty, 29, is said to have carried out a domestically aggravated attack against the woman at his second floor flat on East Hamilton Street on October 1, 2021.

Prosecutors say he seized the alleged victim by her hair and repeatedly struck her head against a wall.

He is also charged with causing her to fall to the floor and 'forcibly' applying his foot to her body and striking her head against a radiator.

Doherty is further accused of pursuing the woman, seizing her by her clothing and dragging her during the alleged attack.

The Crown says he assaulted the woman after forcing entry to a room whilst shouting, swearing and acting in an aggressive manner.

He is also charged with failing without reasonable excused to co-operate with a preliminary breath test whilst under reasonable suspicion by police of later driving when unfit to do so through drink or drugs.

Doherty is said to have committed this alleged offence after police stopped a Mercedes AMG Sport car at Ratho Street — also on October 1, 2021.

Another charge alleges that he failed to give information regarding the identity of the driver of the car at 3.11am that day.

Doherty - who has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges against him through lawyer Aidan Gallagher - is due to stand trial on the matters on August 14.
