THIS week’s look into the Greenock Telegraph archives takes us back 10 years – when a stunned grandmother delivered her newborn grandson just minutes after her daughter called to say she had pains in her stomach.

Linda McKinnon made the special delivery after daughter Lauren Duffy phoned for help.

Lauren suspected she could be in the early stages of labour, as she believed she was starting to suffer contractions.

But just 10 minutes later Linda was cradling new grandson Kayleb – after delivering the baby on her daughter’s bedroom floor.

She told the Tele at the time: “I don’t think she realised it was time for him to come but before I knew it, I was playing midwife.

“When it was all happening, I just tried to keep a clear head. I was just in total shock, but I think Lauren was in shock as well!

“Thankfully everything went fine. Lauren was delighted to have a wee boy.”

Meanwhile, the hunt was on for Inverclyde’s next top model to take part in a catwalk event — and walk away with £200 of shopping vouchers.

The Oak Mall shopping centre in Greenock was set to host its fabulous fashion show and the Telegraph had teamed up with the mall to give two lucky readers the chance to strut their stuff.

The search was on for women and men over the age of 16 and of all shapes and sizes to join in the fun and experience the model lifestyle.

As well as modelling the latest trends and outfits, the models were also going to have their hair and make-up done by professionals, receive expert fashion advice from TV stylist Julie Hannah and walk away with £200 worth vouchers to spend in the mall.

The fashion show had been held for the first-time in 2012 and proved a huge hit with shoppers.

Elsewhere, young people across Inverclyde were ready to get their teeth into a healthy eating project.

The active children eat smart (ACES) was a new healthy eating club delivered by Inverclyde Leisure in partnership with Inverclyde Community Health and Care Partnership and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

It was a 24-week programme designed to assist children and young people — in co-operation with their families — to either lose weight or not to gain any further weight.

The programme aimed to enable participants to try new ways of getting active and how to enjoy healthy eating.

In other news, one of the first ever Recruit winners had risen through the ranks to qualify as a chartered accountant.

Greenock’s Ross McWilliams was among the many hugely successful candidates who had emerged from the pioneering school enterprise programme launched in 2007.

The former Notre Dame High pupil was all set to go to university to study physiotherapy when he signed up for the Recruit — and embaked on a complete career u-turn.

He secured an £18,000 year-long placement as an accounts assistant with Milne Craig, and was soon working his way up the ladder.

Ross had then gone on to work with city firm Alexander Sloan as a fully fledged chartered accountant.

In sport, Morton manager Allan Moore believed his side could build on their opening day win over Cowdenbeath when they took on Falkirk.

Ton travelled through to the Falkirk Stadium in fine fettle following previous week’s solid 2-0 victory over the Blue Brazil at Cappielow.

The win saw the Greenock men hit top spot in the Championship table, and manager Moore wanted them to preserve their place at the summit by picking up another three points against the Bairns.

Sadly it wasn't to be as they went down 3-1, with Reece Hands' late goal proving scant consolation.
