AN award-winning children's author has hailed libraries in Inverclyde for helping families struggling during the cost of living crisis.

Top children's writer Lindsay Littleson visited Central Library in Greenock to speak to youngsters about her new book Euro Spies.

A former primary school teacher, Lindsay hopes to give youngsters a lifelong love of reading.

She believes that libraries should be at the very heart of the community.

Local branches have been running free events throughout the holidays, including Lindsay's visit.

She said: "It is always lovely to get the chance to speak to my audience, the children and their parents.

"But libraries are hugely important places for families to come.

"They are where children develop a lifelong love of learning and they are so important.

"It is great to see the library service in Inverclyde putting so much into help families through the cost of living crisis.

"It has never been more crucial than it is now to give children the chance to learn to love reading for pleasure, that is vital.

"As a former primary school teacher I know myself from experience the difference it makes.

"I have been in Inverclyde many times and have always found it a great place to come and visit."

Lindsay's 'meet the author' session was one of many events during the summer.

She had her audience enthralled as she spoke from her new book, about a group of children who win a sightseeing holiday in Europe but find themselves at the centre of a spying mission and are put in terrible danger.

Lindsay came to writing later in life, having worked in as teacher in Renfrewshire for nearly 30 years.

She said: "I loved writing when I was growing up and wrote stories as a teenager. Then I entered a Cosmopolitan writing competition when I was 20 and came second.

"The first prize was publication, but I won a cappuccino machine. I stopped writing for 20 odd years.

"So in my books and when talking to children, I like to show the important of resilience for young people, that is crucial.

"You should work hard and never give up."
