A MASSIVE fire engulfed a derelict school in Port Glasgow last night.
The old Clune Park Primary on Robert Street went up in flames just before 9pm.
The fire took hold in spectacular fashion, with crowds of people stopping on the Clune Brae nearby to watch from above.
Drone pictures taken by Tele Camera Club member Jim Phanco show the extent of the incident.
The SFRS sent several crews to the scene, with around 30 firefighters involved in the effort at one point. The fire has gutted the building and left it a burnt-out shell.
A high-reach appliance was used to tackle the flames, as the smoke which billowed into the air could be seen for miles around.
The school sits in the heart of the notorious Clune Park estate which the council has been unsuccessfully attempting to flatten for over a decade.
The school closed down in 2008 when pupils moved to Newark Primary under a merger.
Police closed the roads surrounding the incident as firefighters worked long into the night to bring the huge blaze under control. They remained on the scene this morning.
A succession of deliberate fires have been started within the tenement buildings on the estate, which is largely empty now, in recent years.
A full investigation will now be carried out into last night's blaze.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Around 8.55pm on Sunday 27 August, police were called to a report of a fire at a derelict building on Robert Street, Port Glasgow.
"Officers are at the scene and enquiries are ongoing into the cause of the fire."
