AN infant baby who is now dead ingested cocaine at the home of a Port Glasgow woman who is charged with ill-treating the tot, it is alleged.

Shereen Mains is accused of exposing the baby to class A drugs within the property during a period of time spanning three months.

Mains, 34, is facing a total of four charges on indictment at Greenock Sheriff Court regarding alleged offences which are said to have occurred more than four years ago.

A first diet calling of the case was told that post-mortem reports for the now-deceased child 'show the ingestion of substances'.

The Crown says that Mains 'caused or procured the infant to be ill-treated in a manner likely to cause them unnecessary suffering or injury to health' in 2019.

According to court papers, Mains allegedly consumed or allowed others to consume controlled drugs whilst the baby was present and exposed the infant to dangerous substances.

One charge claims that the child 'ingested cocaine'.

Mains is said to have been found in possession of cannabis at the same property in the Port in September 2019.

She was also found with phenazepam - a powerful class C benzodiazepine - on the same date and at the same address, the Crown claims.

It is further alleged that she was found to be in possession of cocaine between June and September 2019.

Sheriff Seith Ireland granted a defence motion from advocate Simon Gilbride for a continued first diet hearing.

Mains is due to return to court on the matters next month.
