POLICE are investigating a possible cannabis cultivation at the same building in Greenock town centre where a £1 million drug farm was discovered last year.

Officers have been spotted standing guard outside the former Poundstretcher shop in West Blackhall Street over the weekend having first attended the empty unit on Thursday.

A Police Scotland spokesperson told the Telegraph: “On Thursday, September 14, 2023, police received a report of a possible cannabis cultivation within a disused premises on West Blackhall Street, Greenock.

"Enquiries are ongoing.”

Force vehicles were still in place this morning (Sunday) as several officers were seen entering the three-storey unit between Nationwide and Little Miss Maddie.

In January 2022, the Tele reported on a huge drug haul recovered by police within the same vacant store.

Hundreds of plants were found along with an array of hi-tech cultivation equipment.

The cannabis farm was believed to have been spread over three levels of the building - with the drugs alone understood to have a street value of at least £1 million.

Chief Inspector Paul Cameron, who led the operation, said at the time that the seizure would cause major disruption to the drug dealing network in Inverclyde.

He said: "I can say with some certainty from the information I have that this will be one of the largest and most significant drug recoveries the area has ever seen."

Another haul on the same street in December 2021 netted £40,000 worth of the drug after a Police Scotland helicopter used onboard technology to detect 'an unusual heat source' in the area.
