A GREENOCK knife thug jailed earlier this year for robbing a vulnerable woman has had more time added to his sentence - after attacking his ex and spitting at a police officer.

Christopher Hendry was ordered to spend 21 months behind bars in July after admitting to snatching a female victim's bag in Clyde Square while hooked on street valium.

Now the 44-year-old has been hit with a further 18-month prison term for offences committed last year.

A sentencing hearing at Greenock Sheriff Court was told Hendry attacked his former partner, with whom he had been in a relationship for almost a decade, at a property in Roxburgh Way in April last year.

Procurator fiscal depute Corey Laouadi said: "At 7.15pm on April 7, the accused attended at the address under the influence.

"He denied being under the influence and was acting aggressively.

"He then grabbed the woman by her hair, pulled her to the floor and punched her to the head and body.

"A witness heard a woman being assaulted and called police and the accused left before officers arrived.

"The victim had reddening to her nose and was visibly upset."

The court heard that Hendry returned to the property the following morning, banging and kicking on the door and shouting obscenities.

Fiscal depute Mr Laouadi said: "A police cell van arrived and while he was being placed in it he continued to shout at police officers and spat at them.

"The officer avoided it and used the van as a shield."

Hendry kicked also kicked out at one PC, and after being cautioned and charged he replied: "I am sorry, sir."

Defence solicitor Aidan Gallagher told the hearing: "The relationship was at times volatile. Drugs and alcohol would lead to incidents between them.

"Thankfully she has not been injured further than what is described in the police report.

"One has to accept that the behaviour is at best inappropriate, the spitting is disgusting."

Mr Gallagher added that Hendry has 'a long history of mental health problems exacerbated by his lifestyle and abuse of drugs'.

Sheriff Neil Kinnear told Hendry: "Fortunately she was not very badly injured but she was injured and that was a very nasty and unpleasant incident."

As well as the 18-month jail term, Hendry has been made subject to a year-long non-harassment order barring him from approaching or contacting his former partner.

A 12-month non-harassment order was imposed and Hendry was jailed for 18 months, backdated to April 11 last year when he was remanded.
