A MAJOR police operation which swung into action early yesterday morning over the mystery death of a man in Greenock is continuing today.
Police are still treating the death as 'unexplained' this morning as the probe enters its second day.
Detectives, uniformed officers and a forensics team rushed to a flat on the town's Antigua Street after being alerted to the discovery of a body shortly after 7am yesterday.
The man's death is being treated as 'unexplained' by police who threw a large cordon around the scene of what has become an intensive investigation.
One eyewitness to the police activity to the Telegraph: “It looked as if something really serious had happened.
“The street was crawling with forensics, detectives, and uniform police.
"I saw two marked police cars, a large police van, at least three plain-clothes cars and two forensics vans.
"The whole area was a hive of activity."
A section of Hope Street – between its junctions with Lynedoch Street and Dellingburn Street – was also sealed off.
Another onlooker said: "Police seemed to quickly cordon off the junction of Antigua Street and Hope Street.
"The detectives were joined by what looked like a forensics team before entering the street.
"Uniformed police were standing guard and stopping drivers coming into Hope Street from Dellingburn Street.
"It was clear that something big was going on.
“The forensic team put white suits on in their cars before joining the investigation.
“Uniformed officers were standing at the cordon at Antigua Street, and at the tape at the top and bottom of Hope Street.
"There were a lot of police."
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 7.05am on Thursday, 21 September, 2023, police were called to a property at Antigua Street, Greenock, following the discovery of the body of a man.
“The death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing.”
