LITTLE ones got their sums right as Glenbrae Children’s Centre took part in a week of maths-focused fun.

The Greenock nursery invited parents and carers along for several ‘stay and play’ sessions which tied in with Maths Week Scotland.

Baking, outdoor nature hunts and a variety of playground activities were all organised for the children and their parents.

Nursery staff also prepared special leaflets for the children to take home to give their families ideas about activities they could do in their own time.

Jaclyn Sweeney, an Equity and Excellence Lead at the centre, told the Telegraph the week had proven to be a huge hit with the youngsters and their parents.

She said: “There’s a lot of numeracy activities going on to share with the parents.

“Our main activities outdoors have been easy things they can do at home like ‘what’s the time Mr Wolf’ or ‘Hopscotch’.

“They're the type of things they can do at home that won’t cost money and will help with numeracy.

“Inside we’ve been making playdough and getting used to them measuring things out, and we’re taking them into the lunchroom and having them make scones as well.

“The kids have loved it, the baking has been very popular.

“It’s been good, every area is set up in the nursery and it lets the parents go round and get a full picture of what their children are doing here.”

Head of Glenbrae Children's Centre, Craig Scott, said the nursery was pleased to see so many families come along.

He said: “The staff have worked really hard to make sure that the activities they’re doing can give parents ideas that they can take home and do there.

“Overall, we’re delighted. This is the first event we’ve had this year and I think roughly 30 families have attended.

“The kids just love getting to spend this time with their parents.

“It’s about showcasing all the great stuff that goes on at the nursery and helping parents realise a lot of the stuff we’re doing can also happen at home.

“We’re delighted with the turnout and the staff have done a great job, they’re so committed.”
