A GREENOCK man has been fined after getting into a ‘stand-up fight’ with his partner which resulted in the pair missing a flight to Morocco because they were taken into custody.

Stephen Gaines, 32, and Gaynor Carrigan, 30, appeared at Greenock Sheriff Court to stand trial accused of acting in an aggressive manner by shouting and engaging in a stand-up fight at an address on Watt Street on September 6.

Ms Carrigan had a plea of not guilty accepted through defence solicitor Gerry Keenan, with Gaines, of Lynedoch Street, pleading guilty to the offence.

Sheriff Edward Gilroy heard that the pair had been packing for a trip they were due to take the following morning.

A verbal altercation and a fight ensued, with Gaines then contacting police.

Officers reviewed mobile phone footage provided by Ms Carrigan and later arrested Gaines.

Fiscal depute Ashley Pollock said: “Having watched the footage, it’s very clear the parties are intoxicated.

“There are punches being thrown and missed. It’s very much just a drunken fight.”

The couple first appeared from custody on this matter on September 7 and were granted bail by Sheriff Lindsay Kooner.

At the latest calling of the case, Gaines’ defence solicitor Amy Spencer said her client had ‘too much to drink’ as a result of ‘anxiety and excitement’ regarding the holiday.

Ms Spencer added: “They had been packing for a holiday they had been saving up for.

“Because they were held in custody, they missed their flight and had to pay an additional £800 to change their flights.

“They arrived at the cells with packed suitcases and made their way to the airport after being liberated.

“They did, albeit a day late, make it to their final destination.”

Sheriff Gilroy said: "It seems to be perhaps a more unusual case."

He fined Gaines a total of £270, reduced from £300 for the timing of his plea.
