INVERCLYDE'S MP has branded the legal prescription of medical cannabis in the UK as an 'unmitigated disaster' and wants to overhaul the rules.
Ronnie Cowan spoke out five years after the law changed to allow doctors to prescribe cannabis.
Despite the landmark change, many families who live with epilepsy still cannot get the treatment on the NHS.
Mr Cowan said: "The UK Government clearly didn't understand the problem and their idea of a solution has let down many people and sadly led to a great deal of confusion.
"We now have politicians and medical professionals blaming each other for the lack of NHS prescriptions and the patients continue to either go without or face huge monthly bills for private prescriptions.
"I am currently investigating amendments to the bill along with the Cannabis Industry Council.
"We need the medical profession to train people to understand the uses of medical cannabis and finally be prepared to prescribe on the NHS."
