A MAN has been charged with attempted murder after an alleged early morning hammer attack at a hair salon in the town centre of Greenock.
Alan Stocks is accused of assaulting a male at the Cutting Room barber shop, which was previously known as Room 2 hairdressing, in West Blackhall Street on Saturday November 25.
According to court papers, the 55-year-old repeatedly struck the alleged victim on the head with a hammer to the danger of his life.
Prosecutors claim that Stocks 'did attempt to murder him'.
The Telegraph had reported over last weekend how police officers had attended at the street following a report of a disturbance which came in shortly after 5am on November 25.
In the aftermath the police said that a 33-year-old man had been seriously injured and taken to hospital as a result.
They also said that a man had been arrested by them in connection with the incident and stated that their enquiries were ongoing as they issued an appeal for witnesses to come forward.
The injured man was treated at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.
In the hours following the alleged attack the area was immediately sealed off, with a police cordon put in place on the street blocking off the premises and officers standing guard.
A police presence remained in place for several hours afterwards as officers conducted their enquiries at the salon during the day.
Stocks, who was represented in court by local solicitor Aidan Gallagher, made no plea to the charge against him during a petition hearing which was held in private at Greenock Sheriff Court earlier this week.
The case against him has been committed for further examination and Sheriff Colin Pettigrew granted bail for the accused.
Matters are expected to call in the court again next week.
