Morton in the Community offering free hot lunch at Cappielow

A tasty meal will be on offer at the Ton’s home stadium every Wednesday until March 27, thanks to funding that Morton in the Community has received from Inverclyde Council as part of its Warm Hand of Friendship initiative.

The project follows on from the charity’s successful ‘Breakfast and a Blether’ programme, which has seen it run a social breakfast club at Cappielow for the last 18 months.

Morton in the Community general manager Jonny Roy told the Tele they were delighted to launch their new initiative.

He said: “After the success of Breakfast and a Blether over the last 18 months we’ve got funding from Inverclyde Council to deliver the Warm Hand of Friendship programme.

“We’re offering a hot lunch at Cappielow from 1pm til 3pm every Wednesday until March 27.

“People can sign up on our website, but they can also just come along and enjoy a hot meal, meet new people and socialise.

“We’ve got some guys from our pathways programme from Notre Dame High School coming along on the Wednesdays to help serve the lunches and we’re very grateful to them.”

Jonny said that the sessions were part of the club’s wider work to help those who are isolated in the community connect with others.

He added: “We’re trying to tackle social isolation, get people involved in the community, and give them somewhere that’s warm and comforting to come on a cold day.

“I think it’s special because they get to see behind the scenes at their local football stadium.

"You don’t have to be a Morton fan to come along - but it’s nice.

“Especially in these dark months it’s nice to have somewhere to go.

“We’ve got all of our regular programmes running in the next couple of months too and we’ve got another couple of employability programmes for 16 to 25-year-olds that we’ll be recruiting for soon.”
