A GREENOCK man charged with chasing his ex with a knife and inflicting a life-threatening head kick and stamp attack on an alleged victim weeks after being told to stay away from him is set to stand trial before a jury next week.

Michael Bell faces six indictment charges including an allegation that he repeatedly kicked and stamped on a man's head to his severe injury, permanent impairment, permanent disfigurement and to the danger of his life.

The charge adds that he hit the man on the head with a metal fireplace and a glass ornament.

Bell, 36, is also accused of brandishing a blade at the same man and his former partner on an earlier date before pursuing them and another male.

Prosecutors claim Bell had the weapon within a common close on Broomhill Way on May 28, 2022.

It is said that he assaulted his ex in a flat on the street by grabbing her by the hair.

He is further charged with attacking the woman again at the same address on August 26 that year by striking her on the head and body with a metal bat or similar implement.

This alleged assault is said to have been carried out around two months after Bell was granted bail and told to stay away from the three people involved in the earlier alleged incidents.

The bail breach charge states that he ignored the court order by contacting and communicating with two of the alleged victims in August 2022.

Bell, of Regent Street, appeared in the dock at Greenock Sheriff Court last week to maintain not guilty pleas through solicitor Gerry Keenan.

The hearing was told that a previous trial diet in November was adjourned because witnesses were not cited to attend.

Sheriff James Spy continued the case to a trial scheduled to begin on February 12.
