A RED letter day is looming for Gourock as the town's new Post Office gets set to open - bringing an end to three years of disruption to the key service.

Greenock Telegraph: Gourock Post Office opens

New postmaster Christopher Allan, who owns six franchises, has announced that the branch in Kempock Street will open its doors next Monday.

The news was welcomed by campaigners including town councillor Lynne Quinn and local pensioner Valerie Boyle, who hope it will put an end to short notice closures and problems which have left customers unhappy.

A former gift shop on the street has been fitted out as a fresh Post Office branch which will offer a range of services including cash deposits throughout the week.

Town councillor Lynne Quinn said: "This is great news for Gourock. This brings an end to three years of uncertainty. People kept turning up at the door of the previous post office branch to find out it was closed.

"The important thing is that people know when the post office is open or closed. This branch will be great news for people like pensioners who rely on the post office and local businesses.

"There is no bank in Gourock, so businesses rely on post office facilities for deposits but also for dropping off parcels to get delivered.

"They have been telling us for years this is needed."

The new PO is at 85 Kempock Street, where Gourock Gifts used to be before it closed down in January this year.

Postmaster Mr Allan stepped in last year to bid for the branch, which will be run by a manager who is from Gourock.

He has faced a number of delays in a bid to get opened as soon as possible, but is now set for next Monday as a 'soft' opening before the official launch a week later.

Pensioner Valerie Boyle, who stays in the town's Castle Mansions, said: "This is brilliant news, I am so happy to have a post office. I use the post office to send parcels to my daughter in Holland and for banking sometimes.

"But I would often come down and find the post office would be closed unexpectedly.

"We need a reliable service in Gourock and I can't wait to have one."
