Journeys between Paisley St James and Inverclyde have been cancelled since 3pm.
Engineers are on site but high river levels at Bishopton have caused challenges during the inspection.
In an update, Network Rail said: "We’re working on a solution and will share more news ASAP."
ScotRail passengers can use train tickets on McGill’s 901, 906, 906X services, as well as the operator’s local services in Inverclyde.
