A PORT Glasgow man who pestered his ex with persistent messages and threatened to take his own life after she ended their relationship has been spared a jail sentence.

Alan Jamieson's two-and-a-half years of harassment against his former partner included him sending videos to the woman claiming that he was going to overdose on pills in an apparent suicide bid.

After filming himself taking tablets he then sent footage from a hospital bed and also stated that he was going to drive into the Clyde after refusing to accept their break-up.

Greenock Sheriff Court heard that the 38-year-old had been in a relationship with the woman for three years and the couple separated in 2019.

Jamieson admitted to engaging in a course of conduct which was abusive of the woman between April of that year and September 2021, while he was acquitted of four further charges relating to alleged incidents from 2018.

When he was initially told not to contact his ex, the court heard, he ignored that request and replied: "Sound."

A procurator fiscal depute said he sent numerous messages and emails to the woman despite being warned that she 'did not want anything more to do with him'.

The prosecutor said: "She received a picture from him later that evening showing him near water stating he was going to drive into the water and kill himself.

"Police attended where he was and found him curled up in the driver's seat."

Jamieson said he was going to contact people on his former partner's social media accounts and sent further messages throughout August 2020, including a picture showing yellow tablets and captioned: "I'm sorry, I'll love you always, I wish I didn't make the mistakes I did but I can't take them back."

He also called her saying he was going to take the tablets and end his life before he then sent a video of him consuming the pills.

The fiscal depute added: "She attended at the dockside near to the fire station where she traced him and contacted his family who took him to hospital.

"He sent her another video in hospital."

The women received more emails in November 2020, while 10 messages were sent over 12 days in February 2021.

Further messages the following month, to which the woman did not reply, included questions over whether she was on any dating sites.

The domestic abuser continued to contact his ex and at one point claimed that he did not realise that he had messaged her.

The complainer eventually contacted police and Jamieson was arrested in March 2022.

Defence solicitor Michelle Skelly told the court: "The majority of the messages contain nothing abusive or threatening, they are simply pleading with her.

"But he does continue to contact her.

"He had been with her on and off for a number of years.

"When she tried to end the relationship his mental health significantly deteriorated. He describes this as a very bad period of his life."

First offender Jamieson, of Mid Avenue in the Port, was assessed as being of low risk of reoffending, according to his lawyer.

Sheriff James Varney said the offences were 'very concerning'.

He added: "At one point in time you were in love together but this type of behaviour does not exhibit that."

As a direct alternative to custody, Jamieson was given an 18-month supervision order and he was banned from approaching or contacting the woman for two-and-a-half years.

He must also complete 135 hours of unpaid work within 12 months.
