A WHEELCHAIR-bound woman who assaulted her grandfather at Inverclyde Royal Hospital and tried to attack a female pensioner has been given unpaid work hours as punishment.

Lauren Kemp admitted two charges of assault against the OAPs before a trial in January and appeared for sentencing at Greenock Sheriff Court last week.

The 27-year-old lunged at her 74-year-old grandparent and kicked him on the leg during the IRH incident last year.

She also struck out at the 70-year-old woman - her grandfather's partner - and grabbed her clothing, the hearing was told.

A procurator fiscal depute told the court: "The accused was within Inverclyde Royal Hospital and police had been in attendance.

"[Kemp] was in a wheelchair and her cigarettes had fallen onto the floor.

"The witness picked them up, at which point the accused kicked him on the leg.

"A police officer attempted to intervene and the accused seized her by the clothing and attempted to kick her on the body."

No injuries were reported after the incident.

Kemp, represented by solicitor Gerry Keenan, had a not guilty plea accepted by prosecutors to a further charge of shouting, swearing, acting aggressively and repeatedly uttering offensive remarks during the same incident on August 6 last year.

She was subject to bail conditions made the previous month at the time of the offences, according to court papers.

Sheriff James Varney told her: "I have no idea why you would want to treat your grandparents like that, they were just trying to help you."

Kemp, of Mill Street, was ordered to complete 90 hours of unpaid work in the community within the next six months.
