FOOTBALL legend and European trophy winner John McMaster has signed for Port Glasgow Juniors.
The former Morton and Aberdeen star who was one of the Gothenburg Greats who beat Real Madrid 40 years ago has become an ambassador for the Undertakers.
Gibshill born John, who was recently given a lifetime achievement award from Inverclyde Council and made this year's Gourock Highland Games chieftain, is looking forward to his new role.
His appointment is one of the many big plans unveiled by Port Glasgow Juniors as they reach out into the community.
John said: "I feel like I am coming back to the place where it all started with Port Glasgow Rovers. I am delighted to be with the juniors. It says it all when the club has 400 kids playing with them and coaches. That is some set up.
"That is an incredible commitment and I'm glad I can be a part of that. I will use my experience to help the coaches and I also hope to coach some of the kids.
"That is what it's all about, giving kids the chance to play football.
"Port Glasgow Juniors have big ambitions and I'm glad I can be a part of that."
Board member Raymond Shaw, who owned a football strip store in Port Glasgow and has a long time connection, is over the moon to have John involved.
Raymond said: "We do have big plans for the juniors and they don't come much bigger than John, look at everything he has achieved in his football career. A boy from Gibshill plays for Aberdeen and wins a European trophy.
"We are setting up an over 35s side, we will also have walking football and we are introducing an under 20s side.
"We try to make our kids football as affordable as we can.
"We are very much trying to make this a community club.
"We have 15 sponsors and great support from the likes of David Carroll of the Caledonian Bar."
The Port Glasgow Juniors have a sportsmen's dinner coming up with Frank McAvennie, Mark Hateley and Tam Cowan as guest speakers.
This follows a recent visit from celebs Calum Best and The Wealdstone Raider.
