A ROYAL Navy nuclear submarine has made its return to Faslane after a marathon stint at sea.
The crew of the HMS Vengeance set foot on dry land for the first time in 201 days on Monday as the vessel arrived at the base on the River Clyde.
The Vanguard-class craft has been submerged beneath the waves since August 29 last year on one of the longest Royal Navy submarine operations ever undertaken.
Those on board were unable to contact their families or see sunlight for the duration of the gruelling mission, as the submarine remains hidden at all times.
Contact with the outside world was minimal, with the vessel only able to receive heavily vetted messages from their friends and relatives, but never send a reply.
