A GREENOCK crash driver who was charged with twice getting behind the wheel while intoxicated with two young children as passengers has been banned from the roads.

Kevin McGurk admitted to driving without due care and attention on Inverkip Street last year while unfit through drink or drugs.

The 30-year-old, who originally faced six charges, had guilty pleas accepted by the Crown to half of the allegations at Greenock Sheriff Court.

McGurk drove a Kia Sportage on Dalrymple Street and Inverkip Street while under the influence on November 5.

He also wilfully exposed a pair of toddlers 'in a manner likely to cause them unnecessary suffering or injury to health' by driving while impaired through alcohol or drugs while they were inside the car.

It was previously claimed that McGurk, of Chestnut Road, drove a different vehicle, a Ford Kuga, on Kelly Street and Custom House Way while intoxicated on December 19.

It was alleged that he failed to provide correct details on his licence and drove in an erratic manner, failing to keep the vehicle under proper control or maintain lane discipline.

The charge added that he swerved on the roadway while impaired through alcohol or drugs and both youngsters were said to have been inside the vehicle, with one of them not restrained in a suitable child safety restraint.

Prosecutors accepted not guilty pleas to those alleged offences.

Sheriff Sheena Fraser called for background reports before passing sentence and McGurk, represented by solicitor Aidan Gallagher, has been disqualified from holding or obtaining a licence in the interim.

He is due to return to court on May 22.
