Weather forecasters have issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms which are set to hit Inverclyde early this afternoon. 

Following the beautiful warm sunny weather over the weekend the Met Office issued an alert in place from 2pm on Sunday, May 12 overnight to 3am on Monday, May 13. 

The Met Office alert states heavy showers and thunderstorms could lead to some disruption in places, especially to travel. It also claimed isolated property flooding is possible.

The warning was initially in place from 3pm but it was moved forward to 2pm. 

The public were told to expect the following: 

  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life

The warmer weather is set to continue for the remainder of the week.
