A GREENOCK adventurer is hiking around 150 miles of some of the country's fiercest terrain to raise as much money as he can for a cause close to his heart.

Inspirational Sam Morris left home in Brougham Street nearly two weeks ago with his sights set on trekking all the way to Skye in a bid to support the life saving Scottish Mountain Rescue team.

The 24-year-old has conquered some of the most beautiful and unforgiving landscapes Scotland has to offer, reaching heights of 8,000 metres and camping out in the wild over the last 14 days.

Now the finishing line is in sight, with his solo trip helping to raise funds for the mountain rescue team with every footstep.

Former microbiologist Sam said: "This is something I care passionately about. I know people are part of the mountain rescue team and people who are alive because of them. I have never needed them but I would love to be involved one day.

"I wanted to take on a challenge and this fits perfectly."

Sam took on the challenge of hiking a mile for every callout the mountain rescue team attends over three months.

He left Greenock on May 10 heading for Arrochar before going north along the flanks of Loch Awe, up along the banks of Loch Etive then over into Glencoe, crossing by ferry, then through the hills into Moidart, then finally up through Morar and to Mallaig.

A great love of the outdoors was fostered for Sam in the 5th Greenock Scouts.

Last year the Tele reported how he had completed the feat of reaching the summit of all 282 Munros in seven years.

He has since taken on some tough peaks including Mount Toubkal in Morocco.

Sp far Sam has raised over £700 for the Scottish Mountain Rescue team through his latest exploits.

Along the way he has kept supporters up to date with a daily blog plus stunning photographs on his Instagram feed.
