A GREENOCK teenager described the upcoming general election as a ‘moment of hope’ for young people as Labour set out its plans for change in Scotland this morning.
Party member Amelie Burt, 16, delivered a speech at an event held at the Beacon Arts Centre before introducing Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar.
The Notre Dame High School pupil has been knocking doors in Inverclyde and speaking with voters in a bid to see Labour candidate Martin McCluskey elected on July 4.
Despite still being too young to have a say in UK elections, Amelie stressed that the upcoming vote is a significant moment for young people across the country.
She said: “For me, this election is a moment of hope.
“There is light at the end of the tunnel.
“The idea that there might be a Labour government in just a few weeks’ time fills me with excitement.
“It would mean that me and my friends could have the opportunities in life that Labour has always given to young people.”
Amelie said it was an ‘honour’ to speak at the event, which heard speeches from a number of Labour party figures – inlcuding Sir Keir Starmer, Angela Rayner and Ed Miliband.
She told the Telegraph: “Young people are our future.
“It’s really important that young people are heard and listened to.
“Sir Keir Starmer will deliver on that for young people across the country.
“We need change, no matter what or how. We need that to happen quickly.”
