THE first ever festival celebrating science, technology, engineering and maths in Inverclyde schools is now ready for take off.

Inverclyde Council's education bosses have  teamed up with Morton in the Community to put an action packed week full of fun STEM activities in place for youngsters of all ages in every school and throughout the community.  

It will all come together with a big family STEM fun celebration in the Watt Institution this Saturday.

The countdown to the festive began with an event in King's Oak in Greenock with primary seven pupil Lucy McGachy winning a competition to design the festival logo.

Inverclyde Council's STEM co-ordinator Gillian Neeson, who is part of the organising committee said: "We're thrilled to launch the Inverclyde STEM Festival, which will provide a platform for our community to come together and celebrate the incredible world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics."

The festival is taking place in partnership with sponsors including Blu Marine who handed over a £5,000 donation to help make it happen. 

There will be a host events running until next Monday aiming to inspire and educate. Local and national companies are visiting all local primary schools to offer hands on activities throughout the week. Secondary schools are hosting open evenings for all featuring the Glasgow Science Centre and Lego.

Local community groups are getting involved with Morton in the Community football sessions during the week also featuring a STEM activity.

The Inverclyde Shed will also be hosting workshops and activities.

Libraries will run classes on coding and Lego.

A molecule treasure hunt is taking place in local shops and businesses in Gourock and a number of STEM nature trails will be hosted by Muirshiel Country Park.

The festival will culminate with a special STEM event hosted at the Watt Institute on Saturday June 8 featuring Science Shows throughout the day, presented by the Glasgow Science Centre, together with hands-on STEM activities.
