FORMULA One fans have the chance to buy a 1992 Mercedes 500 SL originally owned by racing legend the late Sir Stirling Moss.

Moss, who drove for Mercedes and other teams, is considered the greatest driver never to have won a world championship. He was runner-up on several occasions.

His most famous non-Formula One victory was winning Italy’s 1,000 mile Mille Miglia road race in 1955.

Driving a Mercedes 300 SLR and accompanied by navigator Denis Jenkinson, Moss averaged 98mph (some sources say 99mph) and finished 32 minutes ahead of the second car home.

He collected the 1992 V8-engined Mercedes 500 SL from Germany and drove it back to England where it received his 7 SM registration plate. Moss sold the car four years later with 25,602 miles on the clock.

It is being auctioned by H&H Classics at their June 19 sale in Duxford, Cambridgeshire.

The 500 SL carries an estimate of just £10,000-£12,000. With 89,900 miles registered, it has had four keepers and comes with a service history and a letter from Moss confirming he was the original owner.

Moss, who was knighted in 1999, died at the age of 90 in 2020.
