NOTRE Dame High is coming alive with the Sound of Music as the school puts on on a fantastic summer show and its first ever matinee.

Depute head and music teacher Gerard Gordon has decided to break up the four show run and send it into extra time - to make way for Scotland's first match in the Euros on Friday night, when they open the tournament against the host nation Germany.

This year's show sees the Greenock school taking on the Roger and Hammerstein classic, a production that continues to capture the imagination of every generation.

The cast features pupils from first year right up to S6.

Gerard, who is taking charge of his seventeenth summer show, said: "With the big match on Friday night we didn't want anyone to miss out, so we decided to do a Saturday matinee instead, which is very exciting.

"You can't beat a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical and the Sound of Music is like therapy for the soul, no one leaves unhappy, It is a musical straight out of the golden age.

"It has absolutely everything. We haven't performed it for a while and the pupils have absolutely loved it."

In the run-up to the opening show this evening the cast have been busy rehearsing in full costume, including the Von Trapp children characters, nuns and soldiers.

Putting on a good school shows is a passion for Gerard and principal music teacher Greg McGonigal, who are both former pupils.

After the disruption of the pandemic Gerard and his staff were keen to get them back on the calendar as quickly as possible but he admits it was an uphill struggle.

He added: "It was very tough. The younger ones got involved and learned from the older ones, but the older pupils had missed out on the opportunity.

"But we got there, we have incredible talent in the school."

Gerard added: "When I was at school there were a lot of opportunities to get into drama and school was a way in.

"School productions remain so important because everyone has the opportunity to get involved.

"Anyone who wants to be in the show can be, it is inclusive and that means everyone. We have also tried to keep our ticket prices the same for the last eight or nine years, as we know it is tough for everyone just now."
