INVERCLYDE Council's Labour group is facing claims that it was involved in harassing one of the area’s Scottish Youth Parliament members on social media after an official complaint was lodged with the party’s top body, the Telegraph can reveal.

The Tele understands that a tweet made by Inverclyde Labour Group’s X account in late March is one of a number of social media posts which have been flagged to the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

The post in question included a picture of former first minister Humza Yousaf standing on the main steps of Inverclyde Council’s Greenock Municipal Buildings next to Inverclyde member of Scottish Youth Parliament Matthew Quinn.

The ex-SNP leader visited the area in March to celebrate securing a council tax freeze in Inverclyde.

In the X post, the Inverclyde Labour Group account claims that Mr Yousaf standing on the steps of the council’s HQ was ‘in contravention’ of the local authority’s rules on political campaigning on council property.

Mr Quinn, one of Inverclyde’s two non-partisan representatives on the Scottish Youth Parliament, responded to the original post asking that it be taken down.

He later deleted his response after receiving a large number of negative responses from other users. The original post was also later deleted.

Explaining the decision, Mr Quinn stated on X: “I have decided to delete an earlier tweet due to all the attention it was getting, that’s not why I posted it.

“Unfortunately, I have had to block the council administration’s page.

“They keep posting pictures of me and trying to taunt me on social media.

“I hope this will stop.”

A source told the Telegraph the matter has been raised with the NEC as a complaint and is due to be looked into.

When contacted by the Telegraph about the matter, Mr Quinn said: “Due to the ongoing investigation by the Labour NEC I have no comment at this time.”

Scottish Labour’s press office did not respond to the Telegraph’s request for comment.
