IMAGES have shown the extent of damage caused by ‘dangerous and reckless’ wilful fire-raising in a Greenock common close.
Police say firebugs started a blaze within a block of flats on Dellingburn Street in the early hours of Sunday morning.
They issued an appeal for witnesses in the wake of the incident – which took place at around 4.25am.
Photos from the scene show walls and ceilings in the close blackened by smoke.
Police Scotland say enquiries are ongoing, with officers appealing for the public’s assistance to find those responsible.
Detective Inspector Nicky Beattie, of Greenock CID, said: "Thankfully nobody was injured as a result of this dangerous and reckless act.
“Extensive enquiries are ongoing and we are keen to trace those responsible.
“I would appeal to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious, or who has any information which may assist us, to get in touch.
"I am also keen to hear anyone with potential private CCTV, dashcam or video doorbell footage."
