A CHURCH foodbank is continuing to run over the summer to support those in need in Port Glasgow.

Church Angels is based at the United Reformed Church in Brown Street in the town and people do not require a referral to get help.

Volunteer Margaret Wilson says they are as busy as ever and are thankful for donations but have cut down on some foods to make grocery parcels go further.

She told the Telegraph: "We are open twice a week and give out around 36 bags a day. We have cut down on milk, juice and crisps but if we do get any of these in donations, we make sure these go to households with children."

The foodbank has been well supported over the years by local churches, businesses such as Sanmina, EE and the Comet Bar, Lodge Doric Kilwinning No.68 and Port Glasgow West Community Council.

This time the foodbank is not appealing for groceries but carrier bags, as their supply is running low.

Margaret said: "We buy them in bulk but some of them are not strong enough, so any donations of carrier bags would be gratefully received.

"The Iceland ones are the best."

Church Angels opens two days a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10am and noon.
