A CHARITY youth cup has been set up to celebrate Morton's 150th anniversary in honour of one of the club's greatest ever player.

The Jimmy Cowan Tournament is taking place this summer, giving some of the best young footballers the chance to play at Cappielow.

Morton Club Together have teamed up with the Gourock Tartan Army to set it all up in the name of the legendary goalkeeper who also starred for Scotland.

With the early rounds now completed, the final is taking place later this month and promises to be a fantastic family day out.

Organiser George Wall. a Morton Club Together director, said: "We wanted to do something special to celebrate Morton's 150th year and what better way to do that than to have a cup in the name of Jimmy Cowan.

"There used to be a youth cup many years ago and we wanted to bring it back. We wanted to give young players in Inverclyde the chance to play at Cappielow.

"We had the early rounds at Parklea and it has been a great competition so far. It has been great to work with the Gourock Tartan Army as well.

"We are now looking forward to the final."

The Jimmy Cowan final will take place at Cappielow next Sunday, July 21 between Morton in the Community and Port Glasgow Juniors.

Both Largs Thistle and St Andrew's Boys Club will play for third place.

Former Morton director Stuart Duncan, who is runs the Gourock Tartan Army has collaborated with George Wall to pull it all together, with support from Inverclyde Leisure.

The 73-year-old, who was at the recent Euros 2024. said: "I am old enough to remember the youth cup that was played in the 1960s at Cappielow. I remember Joe Harper playing for Mount school  and he went on to have a great career.

"I was able to get sponsorship through the Tartan Army and we thought this was a great way to mark the 150th anniversary. Jimmy Cowan was a legendary goalkeeper for both Morton and Scotland."

Donations from the cup final will go to both Children in Poverty Inverclyde and the Tartan Army's Sunshine Appeal.
