CREATIVE kids at Craigmarloch turned their own story into a song as part of a fun workshop.

Pupils in P2/3 worked alongside Paul Bristow of Magic Comics CIC to produce a book.

His son Connor, a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire in Glasgow, added music to their words.

Paul said: "Instead of creating a comic, we worked with children to create a sensory storybook, look at ways to explain a story without it being read.

"Some children might enjoy touching the materials in the book or the rhythm of the language.

"I told them a bit about local myths and legends and they came up with the story.

"The two stories they were interested in surrounded Newark Castle and the mermaid that lived at the side of the castle.

"I remember hearing the story that the man who owned the castle was an animal trader and there were all these animals trapped in the castle.

"I got them to think of all the different animals that could have been captured.

"So we came up with a story that the animals escaped on the Comet, using references from stories and legends around Port Glasgow."

Connor turned the story in a song and the children performed this at a book launch in front of parents at the school.

Paul said: "We got great feedback, we started visiting the school for short periods before Easter and built the story up gradually.

"They loved singing the song, I think they enjoyed that the most. We got great feedback, from pupils, classroom assistants, teachers and parents.

"The project was one of the most fun projects we've done this year. The artist involved, Kai J Cockburn, is a local artist so it was very much a local project."

Paul is running several comic-making workshops over the summer holidays in Inverclyde Libraries and at the Beacon.

He is holding a storybook session every Thursday at the Beacon with another local artist Louise Carr.
