A SPECTACULAR showcase of artwork created by people across Inverclyde has been unveiled at the Beacon Arts Centre.

The venue's third annual summer open exhibition officially launched last weekend at an event attended by artists and their families and friends.

More than 100 new pieces of artwork are now on display at the Beacon right through until August 24.

The team at the arts centre say the exhibition 'shines a light on grassroots artists', and gives people from all over Inverclyde the chance to exhibit their work in a stunning waterfront gallery space.

The show was put together by the Beacon’s guest curator Fraser Taylor, who is an honorary professor at Glasgow School of Art, and was previously visiting artist and adjunct professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Fraser said the showcase provides the Beacon with an 'important connection with the community in Inverclyde and beyond'.

He added: "Our summer open exhibition is a unique opportunity for anyone living in our communities to have their artwork exhibited, and is a critical part of our cultural offering in Inverclyde and Scotland as a whole.

"It gives local artists, who may have missed out on opportunities to show their work before, the chance to be visible and enjoyed."

Fraser and the team have assembled an impressive array of artworks created by a wide variety of local artists.

The walls of the arts centre are now full of a huge collection of colourful paintings and drawings made using a range of mediums.

Some of the pieces will be available to buy.

The Beacon has exhibitions running all year round which showcase exciting and diverse work created by local, national and international artists.

Upcoming exhibitions include 'Printed and Woven Textiles' by Suzie Cichy, Erin McQuarrie and Heather Shields, and work created by HMP Greenock.

Curator Fraser says its vital to give as many people as possible the opportunity to engage with the arts in an enjoyable and meaningful way.

He added: "We are all proud of the works on display and delighted that we can play our part in helping artists reach a wider audience.

"I am always deeply impressed and humbled by the talent and diversity of art in the exhibition, and I look forward to sharing it with a wider audience over the summer."
