AN award-winning youth band helped inspire a new generation of musicians - by turning household items into instruments.

Riverside Youth Band helped youngsters in Port Glasgow make plenty of noise at a special 'Trash The Band' community music event for all.

They were joined by some of their incredible musicians including trombonist and band member Rachel O'Connor who has finished her first year at the world renowned Royal Academy of Music in London.

On her return home, Rachel helped lead the first ever Trash The Band Day as families made their own instruments and then came together to perform.

Former Inverclyde Academy pupil Rachel, 19, from Greenock, said: "If it wasn't for the Riverside Youth Band I would never have had the confidence to go on and study music.

"They are amazing and have been such a big part of my life. It is lovely to come home during the summer and give back by helping at events like this. I hope other youngsters will be inspired by music."

The award winning Riverside Youth Band has helped so many young people like Rachel learn to love music.

The Royal Academy of Music student, who is studying trombone performance, is living the dream in London.

She said: "It is incredible and I absolutely love it, it is everything I dreamed of and more. Music has given me so many opportunities."

It all began for Rachel when she took up music tuition at King's Oak and she continued to love music at high school.

Rachel was joined by musical director Mark Good and his team including member Laura Good, who specialises in early years, at the event in the New Port Glasgow Parish Church.

On the day they made their own instruments out of household items and then came together at the end to perform.
