GREENOCK’S Coastguard Rescue Team have thanked members of the public for reporting suspected ordnance on a Gourock beach yesterday.

The team were sent to Levan Beach shortly after 1pm to assess the item.

Photographs were taken and passed on to an explosive ordnance disposal team.

Greenock CRT said: “It has since been confirmed that the item was in fact not ordnance and the team has been stood down.

“Greenock Coastguard Rescue Team would like to extend their thanks to the member of the public who reported this.

“While this item was thankfully not ordnance in this instance, the member of the public done exactly the right thing by calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard.”

Anyone who discovers something a long the coast which they think could be a discarded maritime distress flare or ordnance is urged not to touch or move the item.

They should keep a safe distance at all times, as well as calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard immediately.
