A GREENOCK man has been ordered to carry out unpaid work after he threatened to ‘kill’ a supermarket worker.

William Bonner, 39, admitted targeting a staff member at Morrisons in the town on April 27.

He previously pleaded guilty to shouting, swearing, uttering threats of violence and behaving in an aggressive manner towards the woman.

Bonner recently appeared at Greenock Sheriff Court for sentencing, with a procurator fiscal depute telling the court that the witness had started a shift at around 7am that day.

She said: “At around 9:40am, the accused attended and started to place items in his basket, including alcohol.

“The witness began to monitor the accused due to it being too early to buy alcohol.”

Bonner later left his basket on the ground and pointed at the witness, saying: “I’m going to kill you when you come out.

“I’ve got two bank cards, I was going to pay.”

The fiscal despite added: “He made his way to the exit, continuing to make threats towards the witness.”

Defence solicitor Paul Cook said Bonner, of Roxburgh Way, was familiar with the witness prior to the incident, describing a ‘long running dispute outwith Morrisons’.

Mr Cook added: “He does accept that this was entirely unacceptable, particularly considering she was at her place of work.”

Sheriff James Varney told Bonner he was not willing to issue him with a financial penalty due to his record.

He said: “Acting like that in retail premises is unacceptable whether they are your friend or not.

“You cannot go about threatening people like that.”

Sheriff Varney handed Bonner a Community Payback Order which will require him to complete 80 hours of unpaid work within six months.
