A NEW chapter in the story of Inverclyde will be written at a celebration of language, nature, and creativity in Gourock later this month.
The first ever Inverclyde Words Festival is set to take place at Gourock Park and amphitheatre on Saturday, August 10.
Organised by members of Inverclyde Shed's creative writing group, the free event will encourage people of all ages to focus on the power of words, and consider the impact they have on everyday life.
Activities will showcase the work of the Shed, and people of all ages will get the chance to have fun and learn a lot.
Writer Donna Bryson facilitates the Shed's creative writing group and is organising the event with help from group members.
She says everyone is very excited about the inaugural festival.
"Anyone can be creative, and you can be creative in so many different ways," she said.
"We want to celebrate that, to look at words in all contexts, and think about words across different styles.
"Holding the event in the park means we can consider how the environment around us can inspire us, and how that can inform our creativity and ideas."
Many of the activities will be held in the park's amphitheatre, and people who join the celebration will also find fun and excitement out in the bunny park itself.
Writers and members of Greenock Burns Club will be there, and attendees will be able to find out more about the work of the creative writing group.
Fun will include word quizzes and tongue twisters, and discussion of how the language of Shakespeare is used in everyday life.
Youngsters can enjoy a fairy trail accompanied by stories of fairies and folklore, and will get the chance to think about their favourite characters from books.
Bookbug sessions will keep tots amused, as will a fun-packed teddy bears' picnic.
People will gain inspiration from the environment in nature walks celebrating Inverclyde's heritage and culture.
Information on British Sign Language will also be available, and there will be a variety of marquees, stalls, and music.
Produce grown by the team at Inverclyde Shed is set to be on show too.
The Shed's creative writing group started in January, and the idea for the festival evolved after completion of the course.
Work created by members of the group has been gathered in an anthology which will be available at the festival.
The group is open to people of all ages, and with varying levels of experience.
Donna said she hopes to see a lot of people joining her to celebrate the power of words.
She added: "The festival is open to everyone and we want to see people of all ages there on the day.
"There will definitely be something for everyone."
Inverclyde Shed founder Bruce Newlands added: "We're delighted that our creative writing group has organised the inaugural Inverclyde Words Festival.
"It will be a fun day for families showing off some of the work of the Shed, and will let people see our new walled garden growing space that so many schoolchildren have helped us with."
The fun will run from 10.30am to 3pm.
