THE local workforce is to feature in a BBC documentary tomorrow which looks behind the scenes at the production two fiasco ferries that are in the process of being built in Port Glasgow.
Camera crews behind the lenses of BBC Scotland documentary, Island Crossings, will shine a light on some of the challenges faced by the workforce within Ferguson Marine.
In episode three of the second series camera crews visit shipyard where the controversial new ferries MV Glen Sannox and MV Glen Rosa are under construction for CalMac.
The two vessels have been under the spotlight after being the subject of huge delays of nearly a decade and running nearly £300million overbudget.
The episode will see former Ferguson’s CEO David Tydeman provide updates on their progress and he will give viewers a first look at six-years delayed, Glen Sannox, which is intended for the Ardrossan-Arran route, with a hands-on tour of the interior of the vessel within the ships bridge.
Crews will document the build-up to the vessel’s well-publicised sea-trials, a major milestone for both Ferguson Marine and the Arran community that it is hoped that the ferry will one day serve.
Viewers will then get an insight into the meticulous planning that went into the launch of the then Hull 802, now known as Glen Rosa.
Mr Tydeman will also tell crews of one factor that caused mass delays for the Glen Sannox’s completion before finally being moved to Inchgreen dry dock earlier this year.
The episode will also shine a light on the local workers, who’ve been crucial in keeping the production of the two boats going despite facing multiple delays and challenges such as the Covid pandemic.
And one shipyard stalwart will lift the lid on what it’s been like to supply CalMac with a generation’s worth of vessels, which serve the remote communities of the west coast of Scotland, before getting the perspective of one of the hands of the future.
TV crews will also be seen speaking with one of the 50 apprentices currently learning their trade at the shipyard as they discuss what the future of shipbuilding on the Clyde could look like.
Episode three of Island Crossings airs on BBC Scotland, this Sunday at 9pm or can be viewed anytime on BBC iPlayer thereafter.
