THE handover date for one of the long-delayed Ferguson ferries has been pushed back again, the Port Glasgow yard has confirmed.
Ferguson Marine's interim CEO, John Petticrew, revealed today that final work on the Glen Sannox vessel - due to be delivered to operator CMAL this month - may not be completed until the end of September.
In his monthly update to the Scottish Parliament's net zero, energy and transport committee, Mr Petticrew said: "We have, regrettably, identified an additional number of areas which require to be completed on the vessel before we can proceed to acceptance trials.
"The majority of these works will have to take place in relatively small engine spaces, which are already delayed by the prolonged installation of the LNG system, due to the complexity of installation and need to examine the integrity of the pipework.
"This will add to workforce congestion in these areas and, with that, a requirement to re-evaluate our work practices to maintain the highest standards of health and safety for staff and contractors, and to continue to achieve the highest standard of quality of work which we have delivered to date.
"As I’m sure you’ll agree, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our team is our number one priority, especially in an industry like this, where there is simply no room for half measures or cutting corners."
Mr Petticrew added that the new handover date - which, he said, would allow the firm "breathing space" to consider any unknown issues during trials and inspections - could be brought forward if no further issues are raised.
The letter stated that the cost impact of the latest setback is still being reviewed and an updated calculation will be provided soon.
Glen Sannox and sister vessel Glen Rosa - launched earlier this year - were originally set to be finished six years ago but the significantly over-budget projects have been held up by repeated delays due to the complexity of the builds and previous design errors.
