DRIVERS are set for more travel disruption over the course of August as the A8 undergoes yet another round of roadworks – commencing this weekend.

Two sections of works, located on East Hamilton Street and between the Kingston and Newark roundabouts, will see commuters' journey times impacted over the course of the next month.

Disruption will commence this weekend, as part of two weekend’s worth of work that’ll see lane closures on both Sunday, August 4 and August 11 between Cartsdyke roundabout and Dellingburn Street.

This will see lanes closed between the hours of 6.30am-2pm which will allow Inverclyde Council to clear litter and debris from sections of the road.

The council say that they’ve chosen the selected times in order to minimise the impact on drivers with traffic said to be quieter on Sundays.

A council spokesperson said: “Inverclyde Council is responsible for keeping trunk roads free from litter and has been given permission from Amey, the trunk road authority, to close lanes and implement traffic management to protect workers.

“This is the first time the council has been able to access the A8 since 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic followed by Scottish Water drainage works at East Hamilton Street.”

However, a three-phase project elsewhere on the trunk road looks set to see major resurfacing works take place on the Greenock Road.

Work will commence on the eastbound carriageway between the Comet and Newark junctions from Thursday August 8 to Friday August 16.

This will see drivers given limited to no access to the stretch of road between 8pm-6am, with no access to Anderson Street from the Comet roundabout from 10pm each night.

Phase two of the project will see the commencement of the reconstruction of the eastbound carriageway, between August 17-21, between the same hours.

Road users won’t be able to access the Retail Park from the Comet roundabout, the link road between Greenock Road and the A761 roundabout, or Fore Street during this time.

Phase three will see night closures of the westbound carriageway between the Woodhall and Newark Roundabouts – with full closures of the road between August 25 to August 31.
