Plans to build a new storage unit at a builders’ yard in Greenock have been submitted to Inverclyde Council.

Build Depot is seeking permission for the project after running out of internal space at its head office in the town’s Lynedoch Street.

Quigley Architects, the family-run merchant’s agent, sent a letter to the local authority on behalf of its client at the end of last month.

It explained the thinking behind the application for planning permission and spoke of the potential for job opportunities to be created as a result.

The letter said: “The new warehouse will allow us to take some of the overflow products out of our existing warehouse which will in turn create more space for a bigger range of products, rather than the space being taken up with multiples of the same product.

“As we have to buy most of our products in large full load sizes, much of the space is taken up with big volumes of the same product spread throughout the warehouse.

“This will allow us the opportunity to increase sales by having a bigger variety of products from stock.

"It will also help our warehouse to be safer and slicker.

“The more sales we can generate the more job opportunities that will be created.”

The letter said the applicant saved four Greenock jobs after the collapse of bathroom supplies business Ware With All earlier this year.

The letter explained its own new bathroom business needs the extra space, adding: “Since February we have already completed our Greenock and Largs bathrooms showrooms and our Dunoon one is nearly completed.

“Next, we will move onto our Lanarkshire showroom.

“Rather than bringing stock and customer orders into each of the four branches, we have decided to centralise orders coming into the Greenock branch and distribute/deliver from there.

“This will not be possible without the additional warehouse space.”

A decision will be made on the application at a later date.
