Plans to put up palisade fencing at the corner of a fish processing site in Greenock have been approved by Inverclyde Council.

Pelagia has landed planning permission for two sections at the south-west edge of its grounds at the junction of Lynedoch Street and Drumfrochar Road.

The local authority told the company its application was successful earlier this week, confirming the proposal was in line with the relevant provisions of the development plan.

It added in the official decision notice: “This is determined following an assessment which has had regard to the provisions of the development plan, so far as material to the application, and to any other material considerations.”

Pelagia processes trimmings from the Scottish salmon industry and produces oil and protein ingredients, which are used in animal feeds across Europe, the USA and Asia.

A report of handling, which was produced by planners, shed light on the immediate context of the site and the planned fencing work.

It explained: “The perimeter area presently consists of a red brick boundary wall of up to 3.1m in height.

“The inner wall is lined with concrete, and the factory grounds are substantially lower than street level.

“The factory grounds contain a main building, silos and an operational area for loading and vehicle movements.

“A gated entrance is located on Lynedoch Street. Neighbouring premises include a medical centre and bus depot.

“Planning permission is sought for the erection of two sections of galvanised palisade fencing, at the south-west corner site of the factory grounds at the junction of Lyndoch Street and Drumfrochar Road.

“The Lynedoch Street section is proposed to be 9314mm long and a maximum height of 3156mm.

“The Drumfrochar Road section is proposed to be 9160mm long with a maximum height of 2639mm.

“The design of the fence is such that only a minor upper potion of the fence will be publicly visible.

“The applicant proposes to fix the fence to the inner face of the existing brick wall.

“The maximum vertical exposed portion of the fence is limited to 939mm.”
