TWO women are sharing the joy of books with dozens of people in Inverclyde after creating their own book club - which already has a waiting list just five months after launching.

Kelly Moran, 29, and Shereen Lafferty, 30, run On The Same Page – a group which meets monthly at One Bruce Street in Greenock.

The pair of avid readers became friends after messaging about books on Instagram and later attended a book club in Glasgow together last year.

They found there was a desire for something similar in Inverclyde and decided to host their first meet-up in the area in April.

The group has since become so popular that Kelly and Shereen have started a waiting list for those interested in coming along.

Shereen said: “When we first booked One Bruce Street, we booked a few tables at the back.

“We thought we’d maybe get about ten people.

“The first month we had about 30 people - and then from people putting it on their Instagram, we gained about 150 followers that night.

“We then had to move the ticketing online and they’ve sold out within two minutes in the last few months.”

Kelly added: “We were so nervous about it. We made it our baby for a while hoping it would take off.

“We really wanted to make it inclusive so that if you wanted to get into reading, you could come along. If you were a well read person, you could also come along.

“We’ve had people who have never got through a book coming to their fourth and fifth meeting.”

Kelly and Shereen say they have are keen to work with local businesses through the book club, with many already having donated prizes for their monthly quiz at the meetings.

This weekend, they have organised a private screening of It Ends With Us at Greenock’s Waterfront Cinema.

The film has been adapted from Colleen Hoover’s New York Times bestseller of the same name.

Shereen told the Tele: “People like the social aspect of the club, not just the book, but some people don’t want to come on their own.

“It can be a bit intimidating, so we thought the cinema might be a nice place for them to try it.

“We’ve got some people who came the first month on their own and sat with other people who were on their own.

“We came to set up the next month and they had come for dinner before, so wee friendships are blossoming too.”

The book club meets on the last Thursday of every month, with updates on tickets being provided through @onthesamepage_ks on Instagram.

Tickets are still available for Sunday’s cinema screening and can be booked at waterfrontcinema.co.uk.
