A YOUNG boy was pinned to the ground and bitten by an 'XL-Bully-type' dog during a vicious attack the day before his birthday. 

Terrified Kailum Buchan was hospitalised with several bite wounds on his lower body and spent his twelfth birthday in bed following the harrowing ordeal.

The 12-year-old was waiting at a bus stop on Drumfrochar Road last Tuesday when he was set upon.

His mum Michelle Williams told the Telegraph that her son had been unable to start high school on Friday due to his injuries. 

The 51-year-old says her son was seriously shaken up after the attack and she is not yet sure how he will feel around dogs in the future.

She said: “The first thing he said to me the other night was ‘it’s got a taste for my blood’.

“That’s what he said when he came out of hospital, it’s terrible.

“He had just gone with his pal whose dad works up the industrial estate to see his pal’s dad and then when they went to get a bus into the town he was attacked by a dog.”

Michelle was called to the scene by a staff member from a nearby bar who stepped in to help.

She added: “When I got there, they brought him out to me and he was chalk white and crying. I had to take him to Inverclyde Royal, he’s been given a case of antibiotics.

“At the hospital they told us it was a bad bite, it’s gone right in.

“But it could have been so much worse, it could have gone for his face or his eyes or anything.

“I ended up having to put his joggers in the bin, they were covered in blood.

“I was shocked, my nerves were just gone completely.

“All these different things were going through my mind while I was trying to drive.

“I was terrified, and the doctor could see it in my face because all I could think was that it could have been his face, or his throat and he could’ve been dead.”

Michelle was told that the animal that attacked her son was an XL bully-type dog, which was being walked by two men alongside another dog just before the incident.

She is urging those involved to come forward to prevent another attack happening.

She said: “The next time something like this happens it could be worse. 

“I’m actually quite angry, a dog should not be going for my child.

“He plays up parks and stuff where there’s plenty of dogs, like wee dogs, and they don’t come near them.

“But when these big dogs are about, it’s just not fair on the kids.

“That could have been a baby or an elderly person."

She added: “It’s not fair on the animals themselves either. It’s not a dog’s fault, an animal doesn’t ask to be born into this world."

Michelle said she and the rest of the family did what they could to help Kailum enjoy his birthday despite the distressing incident, but his injuries meant he wasn’t able to attend his first day at Port Glasgow High.

She added: “He stayed in bed most of the day on his birthday but it is what it is.

“My older son has a dog, but it’s a collie and she’s so pally, I would be alright with it now but I’m not sure about Kailum. We won’t know how he is with it until it comes over.

“We’ve got a card and flowers to go to the girl from the pub, Caroline, she was fantastic, and the owner Eddie too.

“They were so helpful and I can’t thank them enough.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 12.05pm on Tuesday, August, 13, police received a report a dog had bitten an 11-year-old boy in Drumfrochar Road, Greenock.

“The boy was treated at hospital and has since been released.

“Enquiries are ongoing to trace the dog and its owner."
