A CHARITY concert featuring the Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland will take place at the Beacon Arts Centre on September 13.

This year's gala event coincides with the with the Scottish Fire Service 200 years of Celebration of the first municipal fire service in the world formed in Edinburgh under James Braidwood in 1824.

Even more special is the fact that Mr Braidwood's great-great-granddaughter Diana Hamilton-Jones will be in the audience.

David Adam, chair of the Scottish Fire Brigades Heritage Trust, said: "It is a great honour to have Mr Braidwood's relative at attendance at the concert here in Greenock in this special anniversary year."

Mr Braidwood then went on in 1833 on to be the first Superintendent of the newly formed London Fire Engine Establishment and was always making improvements, keeping his men well trained and well cared for.

He sadly died attending the Tooley Street fire in 1861 which led to an act of parliament to create the London Fire Brigade.
