ON this day 12 years ago the Tele told how more of Inverkip Power Station had been reduced to rubble as demolition work continued.
As part of continuing work to pull down the station, a controlled explosion was carried out to demolish two ‘air heater’ structures.
Clouds of dust billowed from the building and piles of rubble spilled as the explosion took place, captured by Tele snapper George Munro.
Contractor Brown and Mason carried out the task on behalf of station operators ScottishPower.
It was the latest stage of demolition work and followed a similar controlled explosion of two air heaters the previous month.
The structures, predominantly made of steel and measuring 30 metres in height, were located on the seaward side of the main boiler house, in the same area as the similar unit which was demolished last month.
Work at the Inverkip station had been ongoing for two years to remove equipment and structures from the site in advance of potential redevelopment.
Plans for the site once vacated included a proposal for a mixed-use development of up to 780 houses plus small business units and shops.
The full demolition programme at Inverkip was set to run for at least a further 18 months.
