A MAN has appeared in court charged with biting another man's ear and leaving him scarred for life in broad daylight in a Greenock street.

James Coyle junior is said to have repeatedly punched his alleged victim on the body, causing him to fall to the ground, on the road outside a property on Finneston Street.

The 31-year-old allegedly kicked the man on the body several times before grabbing him, pinning him to the ground and biting his ear.

Prosecutors claim that the alleged victim was severely injured and permanently disfigured as a result of the reported incident on August 23.

The Telegraph previously reported that police rushed to the area at around 4.30pm on Friday, following a report of a serious assault.

A 29-year-old man was taken to hospital for treatment.

According to the Crown, Coyle jnr, of Auchendarroch Street, was subject to bail conditions at the time of the alleged assault.

He made no plea through solicitor Aidan Gallagher during a private petition hearing at Greenock Sheriff Court on Tuesday.

Sheriff Sean Lynch committed the accused for further examination, and he was released on bail, with a condition not to approach or contact the alleged victim.

His next appearance in the dock will be confirmed at a later date.
